Set in the lush but socially rigid world of French Colonial Vietnam in 1929, The Lover traces the voyage of a young French school girl who encounters a wealthy Chinese gentleman on a ferry crossing the Mekong. Their undeniable and magnetic encounter sparks a secret and passionate love affair kept hidden from society, as well as the girl’s family. The girl’s world is devoid of her home’s behalf, and thus, a chaotic mess. She becomes to appreciate the comfort found in the older man’s world.

🌍 REACTION – Mixed Reviews but Boldly Different

Cinematography won and criticized for various reasons. The strong representation of physical love, especially with a teenage character, created a stir. Some audience considered it a poetic and tender reflection of first love and for others, it was pure exploitation. Nonetheless, the captivating imagery and scoring along with soft haunting score were appreciated.

Leaded to another award nomination for ‘The Best Cinema Photography’ and Won ‘Cesar Award’ for best original score of the movie, giving it credit un artistically acclaimed despite the arguments.
