The Kashmir Files, one of the works directed by Vivek Agnihotri, is a poignant drama that chronicles the traumatic journey of the ethnoreligious group known as the Kashmiri Hindus as they left the Kashmir valley in the 1990s. Pushkar Nath Pandit portrayed by Anupam Kher: A retired schoolteacher and a defender of the collective memory of the lost and the dispossessed, he represents the pain and unfulfilled dreams.

📝 THE STORY – A Search for Reality Within Darkness

The storyline moves between two timelines: 1989–1990 and the modern world. the advances in technology. In the previous timeline, the film focuses on the growing violence and threats towards the Kashmiri Pandits and their violent exodus from the valley. Families are shattered, lives are lost, and entire communities are uprooted. ​

In the modern world, Krishna Pandit is raised away from the horrors of his ancestral homeland; influenced by modern academia that seeks to gloss over or reinterpret the events of the past through the lens of political correctness. After the death of his grandfather, Pushkar Nath, however, he must travel to Kashmir along with the remains for the last rites and fulfill the grandfather’s last wish. This journey turns out to be a pilgrimage of sorts wherein he confronts uncomfortable truths, unmask buried realities, and challenges logic-defying narratives. ​

Historical revisionism: The film illustrates the silence and neglect of history and chronologically past events, highlighting how essential dealing with history can be psychologically, and how healing and progress.

Searching for Identity: The film examines one’s bond with self and community and the layers of identity construction, with respect to both individual and collective identity, and particularly suppressed identities, through history and outside forces using Krishna’s journey.

Moral Ambiguity and Bureaucratic Apathy: Characters like Brahma Dutt showcase the multitasking problems of duty, morality, and systemic red tape that has to be navigated by order-following subordinates.

The release of The Kashmir Files was met with mixed reactions. While for some the film rekindled the fact that an exodus is one of the most heart-wrenching chapters of Indian history and applauded Anupam Kher’s performance, deeming the film a box office success due to the ample discussions it sparked, others criticized its portrayal of events as factually incorrect.

Discussions took place discussing the film’s rendition of the exodus as a genocide and how it could potentially escalate communal violence.

Regardless of the debates, The Kashmir Files was able to spark discussions related to the exodus of the Kashmiri Pandit, allowing for reflection and conversation across multiple strata of society.

🧨 FINAL VERDICT

The Kashmir Files exemplifies an attempt at addressing a dark chapter in India’s history and in so doing, attempts to hold a mirror unto the viewer regarding the consequences of living with historical amnesia, the intricacies of truth, merciless reality of injustices, and their enduring mark on the present. Although many may have a different opinion of the film, one cannot deny the fact that it has irrevocably changed the narrative on the Kashmiri Pandit’s consequent suffering and the trauma that afflicts the community.
