The 8th Night

🧠 Plots Summary

A long time ago, there was a demonic being with two glowing red eyes, that caused destruction throughout the world. Only the Buddha was able to help split the demon’s eyes apart and sealed them in sacred containers, one buried in the East, the other in the West. The demon can only come back if both of his eyes reunite.

Recently, archaeologists have discovered one of the sacred eyes, triggering a series of possessions and deaths. To prevent this, Seon-hwa (Lee Sung-min), a former monk turned recluse anguished by personal tragedy, and his unwilling young protégé, Cheong-seok (Nam Da-reum), must take the necessary steps.

As the pair faces numerous losses along with a long list of guilt weighing down their souls, they fight to stop the ancient evil from returning on the final night of its resurrection. Throughout this process, the duo wrestle with profound existential crises, sheer horror, and the nature of pure malevolence.

In the end, they discover a heart-shattering truth that completely reshapes the dynamics of pursuit and victim, while simultaneously, performing a powerful exorcism which showcases the notion of compassion through suffering in Buddhism.

🎥 Themes & Emotional Undertones

🧿 Buddhist Cosmology & Karma

The film sidesteps Western demonology in favor of Buddhist demonology, examining the fight between earthly suffering and the path towards enlightenment. Karma—both as individuals and as a collective—is also central to the storyline.

😔 Guilt, Grief & Redemption

The 8th Night depicts the burden of spiritual obligation alongside personal loss. Seon-hwa’s mission involves more than just halting the demon’s chaos; it is also attempting to atone for an enduring haunting past.

👁️ Faith vs Rationalism

The conflict between faith and rational thought collides with the character Seon-hwa and the skeptical police. The film seems to consider both views along with the skepticism of the police characters, albeit gives greater credence to metaphysical phenomena.

🎧 Cinematic Style

Kim Tae-hyung’s direction provides the film with an atmospheric and stylish aesthetic:

Employs candlelight and shadows to create a mystical tone.

Flashbacks, visions and hallucinations are shown in a disjointed manner reflecting the broken timelines and identities of the possessed people.

Long meditative takes that focus on the spirituality and emotion of the film, as opposed to rely on jump scares.

🔊 Sound & Atmosphere

The soundtrack consists mostly of chanting, low percussion, and gongs creating an eerie atmosphere.

Ambient sounds such as whispering, chanting, and wood creaking add to the story’s ritualistic horror.

🌟 Reception

🎯 Critical Response:

Rotten Tomatoes: 67% (audience score)

While praising the film’s strong performances, emotional depth, and unique mythological foundation, many criticized its slow pacing and complex lore.

🎥 Streaming:

The film was released worldwide on Netflix, gaining attention for its non-Western take on the sub-exorcism horror genre.

✅ Final Verdict

The 8th Night (2021) is a more atmospheric piece of spiritually-influenced horror that remains uniquely its own due to its Buddhism elements, its emotional components, and its deliberate pacing. It is not as frightening as it is contemplative, and offers a different perspective of the exorcism subgenre, framing the conflict between good and evil as one of grace instead of vengeance.
